Moving from Windows Mail to another email app

Keep your existing messages safe when switching from the retired Windows Mail app to Outlook or Thunderbird.

Windows Mail is no longer supported

Microsoft ended support for Windows Mail, Calendar and People on 31 December 2024. Windows Mail is no longer a supported option for sending or receiving email. Use a supported app such as Outlook or Thunderbird instead of setting up a new account in Windows Mail.

Before you switch

  1. 1Sign in at https://webmail.turnerdigitalhosting.co.uk and check which messages and folders are on the server.
  2. 2Identify important mail, contacts or calendar items that are stored only on your computer. Follow Microsoft's export guidance to keep a copy before removing Windows Mail or its account.
  3. 3Choose your new email app and add the mailbox using IMAP with the settings in our Outlook or Thunderbird guide.
  4. 4Allow the server folders to synchronise, then check your Inbox, Sent folder and any important folders.
  5. 5Send and receive a test message. Keep your exports and the old app's local data until you are sure nothing important is missing.

Protect locally stored mail

  • IMAP synchronises messages held on the server, it does not automatically move mail stored only on your computer.
  • Export and import options depend on the app and data format. If you are unsure, contact us before deleting an account or uninstalling software.
  • Your mailbox address can stay the same when changing apps, you are changing the app, not the email provider.
