Setting up email in Outlook

Add your mailbox to Outlook on a Windows PC using IMAP.

Try the automatic way first

In most cases Outlook sets the account up on its own from your email address and password. Use File, then Add Account, and enter those two details. If Outlook cannot find the settings, use the manual steps below.

Add the account

  1. 1Open Outlook and go to File, then Add Account.
  2. 2Enter your full email address, select Advanced options, tick Let me set up my account manually, then click Connect.
  3. 3Choose IMAP.
  4. 4Enter the incoming and outgoing server settings below, then click Next.
  5. 5Enter your password and click Connect.
  6. 6Click Done once Outlook confirms the account was added.

Good to know

  • Your username is always your full email address, not just the part before the @.
  • You can use either host name, the branded one works for every mailbox we host, and your own domain's works when your domain uses our nameservers.
  • Replace yourdomain.co.uk with your own domain name, for example if your domain is acme.co.uk, use imap.acme.co.uk and smtp.acme.co.uk.
  • If your own domain's host name shows a certificate warning, use the branded host name and tell us, we'll get the certificate sorted.
  • Passwords are case sensitive, type them exactly as provided.
  • If setup fails, double check the spelling, the port numbers and that SSL is switched on.
  • In the new Outlook for Windows, go to Settings, Accounts, Email accounts, Add account, then choose IMAP under advanced settings.
