Email has stopped working, what to check

Work out whether an email problem is with your connection, password, app or mailbox.

Start with these checks

  1. 1Check that you can open another website. If not, reconnect to the internet or try another connection.
  2. 2Note the exact error message and whether the problem affects sending, receiving or both.
  3. 3Try signing in at https://webmail.turnerdigitalhosting.co.uk. If webmail works but your app does not, check the app settings. If both fail, contact us rather than repeatedly guessing the password.
  4. 4Check that the username is the full email address. If the password changed recently, update it for both incoming and outgoing mail on every device.
  5. 5Compare your app settings with the tables below, keeping SSL/TLS switched on.
  6. 6Send a test message to another address you control and reply from that address. Check Junk or Spam folders and read any delivery failure message.

Common symptoms

  • Receiving works but sending fails, check outgoing SMTP authentication, username, password and port 465.
  • A mailbox full warning, check the usage shown in the bottom left of webmail and contact us about storage. Deleting mail through IMAP can remove it from the server and other connected devices, keep copies of important messages first.
  • A certificate warning, do not disable SSL or accept an unexpected certificate. Check the host name and contact us with the warning.
  • A mailbox that suddenly cannot send at all may have reached a sending limit, or been switched off by us because spam appeared to be going out from it. Contact us either way.
  • Problems after a domain change, tell us when the change was made and which email provider you use. Do not change more DNS records while troubleshooting without checking first.
  • Do not delete and recreate an account as your first fix. Messages stored only on your device may be lost.

What to send to support

Include your email address, the app and device you use, when the issue started, whether webmail works and the exact error text. A screenshot can help, but hide passwords, verification codes and any private message contents.
